I'm sure there's been at least 1 of you out there that have wondered how I came up with the name "pulp + palette". Let me tell you, it wasn't easy. There are about 7,291 words in the English {and French} language that I love so much and at least 93% of them were shortlisted to be at least 1 word in my new business name. I went through list upon list of the things that I love and tried to find words to associate with them. I thought and I pondered and I lost sleep. And then, in a flash, without thought or contemplation, pulp & palette were the 2 words that hit me, all at once. I put the 2 together, thought about how I could use them, and there you go.

I wanted my name to represent my design in 2 different ways:

1} Pulp: I'm learning the art of the letterpress and "pulp" made the cut because of my ~~obsession~~ love for cotton rag paper/card stock, which, is a common choice of card stock among letterpress printers. I'll certainly stock plenty of it. Oh, and as a side note, once I'm comfortable and confident in my skills as a letterpress printer {I'm slowly getting there}, then letterpress will be the main printing option that I'll offer.

2} Palette: This word encompasses all of the other design aspects that I'll cover on my revamped blog. From all sorts of interior design {one of my favourite forms of design} to DiY, my revamped blog will be my chronicles of my own DiY projects or projects that at some point, I want to tackle. I will say this now, at the risk of losing blog members and/or not gaining any new ones, I will have very little posts regarding weddings and even less posts regarding fashion. I'm not the typical girl. Fashion is probably the very last thing on my list of priorities, so I'm not going to take time to write about it. Weddings? Well, I love them, indeed I do. But, I'm going to focus more on lifestyle and design. Wedding inspiration boards? No. I won't have them. And I'll keep the reasons why I won't, to myself. But, I will have Lifestyle boards. More on those in a later post.

So, there you have it. That's the reason why I chose pulp + palette.

As you can see, and some of you already know, times they are a changin'.

Because our family made a huge cross country move, from Melbourne, to the middle of the Australian Outback, I had to seriously evaluate The Paper Couturière and the feasibility of continuing to offer a custom design service for my clients. Given the fact that I'm about 2 1/2 hours away from Darwin, the next ~~major~~ town around, I knew that custom design would no longer be an option. So the next best thing would be to offer a range of already designed invites, solely online, where the client can personalise with wording, fonts & colours. So far I've designed 20 suites, but I will continue to add to the collection in the effort of keeping the collection fresh and new.

Not only will pulp + palette offer fun, fresh, clean, and beautiful invitations, I've also decided to extend my range to what I call "Heirloom Paper Goods". Why Heirloom Paper Goods, you ask? The thought came from my love of treasured items that are passed down within a family. From a christening gown, to a beautiful piece of jewelry, all the way to love notes passed between great-grandparents, a classic book, and recipe cards that hold the beautiful handwriting of our great-grandmothers, not to mention the delicious family recipes. With that tradition in mind, and because I have such an affinity for collecting items that have come through my own family tree, I decided my 3 new collections would consist of recipe cards; book plates & notecards.

Each of these 3 collections will consist of at least 20-30 designs and will be sold in individual packs. The details of which, I'm not entirely sure as this is currently all still unfolding. But they will be sold on high quality heavy weight cardstock, which will be both acid and lignin free. Which means that through the years, the card stock will not break down, will not yellow, and will not harm any other priceless possessions that they're stored with {ie. other paper, photographs, etc}.

As of now, the website is still under construction. My old website is not getting a facelift at all...I'm starting all over from scratch to better reflect the new business, the paper goods that I'll be offering and to better reflect where I want the business to go in the future. A new blog will be coming along with that new website. Details of which, will come in time.

A couple things to keep in mind:

1) I will be phasing out my Facebook page for The Paper Couturière, and eventually closing that page down. I have started a new page for pulp + palette and I would love for you to like that page so you can stay up to date with what's happening. It's a very exciting time now and I don't want anyone to miss out on anything.

2) Probably tonight, I'll be changing my Twitter account from @papercouturiere to @pulp&palette. Please, I ask that you pass this information to anyone that you may "tweet" with or otherwise know. I don't want anyone to think that I've closed my account when I've just changed my "handle".

3) For now, my blog will remain The Paper Couturière. I'll get around to changing the name in the next couple of days, but my redesigned blog will be launched when the new website is launched, hopefully in the next couple of months.

Again, thank you so much for all of the support you've given to me and The Paper Couturière the past couple of years. It's been a learning experience for sure, but with the pulp + palette, I want to take it to the next level, the next 10 levels. I want to provide a new service that Australian brides have yet to receive... a beautiful quality design on the finest card stock available, with printing methods that aren't readily available with online boutiques. {More on this later.} And also to offer classic, timeless, heirloom paper goods that grow more meaningful with age.

2011:: Bring it.

2010 has brought so.much to my life that I can't even begin to go into it all...from extreme lows to extreme highs and everything in between. Not 1 moment of regret through any of it. It's 31 December 2010 and all I can say is "2011? Bring it." Bring the highs. Bring the lows. Bring the in-between's and the out-of-balances. I'm on it. All of it.

2011 will bring many changes to me personally and professionally. I'm working on a new website and a complete business restructure, which has lead me to design a completely new collection and even design lots of extra's...all of which you'll see when I have my big relaunch. I know I've been promising things would be finished by the New Year, but, I'm a perfectionist and I'd rather wait 4 or 5 months and know that it's perfect, than launch it too soon and it's "meh". So, you'll have to wait a bit longer. As we're, literally, living in the middle of the great and vast, Australian Outback, I will no longer be offering fully custom design services. I won't be able to meet clients seeing as how I live 2 1/2 hours from the nearest "city". But, hopefully what I've designed will more than make up for it. But, more on that later.

In the meantime, have a wonderfully joyous and SAFE New Year's Eve. Have a prosperous New Year and 2011 and my sincerest wish for you all is love, happiness, joy and all the success you could imagine.

I've learned during my years as a business owner that the most rewarding accomplishments come with the smallest of baby steps. Which is why I'm not shooting for 1000. I'm shooting for750.

The Handwritten Brigade:: Part Deux

I have had so darn much overwhelming support for this little 3 person club that I started the other day. It's amazing how quickly the word has spread and now our little 3 person club has turned into a mighty handwriting army that spans 4 continents & countless states/regions in each of those continents. Oh wait. Let me just repeat that because I can't comprehend it just once::

FOUR.GOSH.DARN.CONTINENTS!!

I've only just completed the 1st sample design that I decided to create especially for this handwritten revolution we've started, and everytime I turn around, someone else is contacting me wanting to join. How awesome is that?! How awesome are YOU?! So I ask you to please continue spreading the word to your friends; family; pets; neighbours and neighbours great Aunt twice removed. And for each one of you that is going to write a letter and then pay it forward, I ask you to PLEASE email me your name, a little about yourself, and how many people you've told to write a letter & pay it forward. For the people that you've asked to participate, please pass my email address on to them & ask them to email me with the same information. I promise you, as sure as I'm typing this, your information will not be given to anyone else, advertised or displayed in any way. I just want to keep a running list of how many people are participating so I can occasionally post numbers, and also give each of you a badge for your blog and/or website.

Based on the response and the feedback that I've received so far, it's so easy to see that people crave real social contact and meaningful communication. I am so thankful with how far this project has come and I would be so happy with the results, even if it had to end today. But knowing it doesn't end today, I'm so excited to see just how far it can go. With your help, it's limitless and knows no boundaries.

Revolution: Handwriting Style

So tonight I was on Twitter, like I am every other moment of every other day, and I started "talking" to a lovely girl, Kismet, from The Unreal Bride. We were chit chatting about packages and how great it is when we receive one. Then, she opened up a can of worms when she said something to the effect of "I'd be happy with a letter." And so it began....

We discussed this whole letter writing thing and I decided that I'd send her a letter. Why not? I don't really know her. Only started tweeting with her tonight, but what the heck? Everyone appreciates a beautiful letter. We decided, along with my dear friend Steph {@stephbubble}, that we're going to start a handwriting revolution. I've aptly named the 3 of us, The Handwritten Brigade. In an age of social media, emails, and texts, a handwritten letter is beautiful, special, and can be treasured well after the letter's arrived.

So, tomorrow I will design some special, beautiful stationery and I'm going to write a heartfelt letter to 2 girls in 2 different countries, and hope that it makes them smile. But along with that letter, I'm going to send them each a blank card. And I'm going to ask each of them to pay it forward by handwriting a note, in that blank card, and sending it off to someone else with another blank card for that person to write their own note. And on and on I hope it goes.

My challenge to you is that you do the same. It only takes 5 minutes to write a note to someone you care about, even just to let them know you're thinking about them. And when you do this, I encourage you to pay it forward. Can we do this?

Stumbling

What is this? This is my stumbling block. In terms of it's overwhelming size, the camera does it no justice. It might as well be the size of Alaska.

This is how I've been feeling the last couple of days. Like 1 big ginormous stumbling block is in my way... personally, professionally, as a wife and as a mother. I hate the feeling of being out of control. Yet that's all that I feel and it is scaring the hell out of me. I need to change the behaviours and actions of others, but I can't. I can only change mine. And it scares me. It scares me more than I can say.

But I received a gorgeous email today from one of my Twitter friends who is living in the Bay Area, she shall remain nameless but she knows who she is, and her email made me realize so many things. Namely, that when I make an honest blog entry, like I did last night, it's going to resonate with at least 1 person. And I have the email in my inbox to prove it. But what's even more spectacular than that, is that while she's telling me how much she related to my journey, I was relating to hers. It's strange how that works.

And I realized something after I closed the email down.

And that something is this: No matter what I'm feeling, no matter what stumbling blocks are in my way, no matter what obstacles the universe is throwing in my path, there is always at least 1 person who understands and can relate. I'm not alone. I. Am. Not. Alone.

I still have concerns right now about things that are bigger than design, bigger than my business, bigger than anything. And they are HUGE concerns. But knowing that at least 1 other person out there is feeling what I feel, in some way or another, lets me know that, I can AND will, climb that stumbling block. And when I get over it, when the problems that I'm facing have been dealt with, and put into their proper place, I know that I'll be able to look at the ginormous stumbling block that might as well be the size of Alaska and say, "Geez! Look at that little pebble I just walked over!"

I'm sorry. Again.

Well, here I am again. My name is Autumn and I'm a serial blog-neglecter. {Is that even a word? "Neglecter"? It looks weird.} Anyhoo.

Many of you know what I've been up to the past few months, but for those of you who don't, let me give you the scoop....

1) My Husband got a job transfer.
2)We moved from Melbourne.
3)We moved to the Northern Territory.
4)Specifically, the great Australian Outback.
5)More specifically, Kakadu National Park
6) I decided I didn't have enough going on in my life so I thought a business re-structure was a good idea.

That pretty much sums it up and lets you know where I am now:: Still in the midst of aforementioned business restructure.

To be honest with you, I wasn't happy with the way it was "working" before. Why, you ask? Well, because it just wasn't working. So because I'm not a glutton for punishment I decided I needed to grab it by the reigns and pull tight to make the whole shindig come to a grinding halt. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. I took stock of where I was at, where my business was at, and where I wanted it to go. Boy, was it hard. Boy, isn't it STILL hard. But, it's a difficult path that I'm willing to take because, as the saying goes, the journey is better than the destination? No. That's not it..The destination isn't as special as the journey? No. That's not it either. You know what I'm getting at. I love this journey. I'm struggling. It's hard work. I'm stressed, to the max, and at times, supremely frustrated. But I love every.single.minute. Why? Because it's my baby. Because it's my passion. Because I know as sure as I'm writing this, that design is what I'm meant to do. It's my purpose on this Earth. It's my love, and I love it so.

So, I've been designing new paperie, designing a new website, and scouring the ends of the Earth for the perfect web designer whose ideas; creativity; aesthetic and style will mesh with mine. I want a beautiful product and I want my visitors to enjoy my site...to return time and time again. I know I do that with websites that I love, whether I'm buying or not. {Sorry all you eCommerce peoples. Sometimes I just wanna browse.}

Oh yeah, and I bought a new letterpress. At this moment, she's on her long journey from France to Australia. She's my 2nd baby. {My first baby is a teenage girl human baby named Hunter.}...More on the press later.

So, essentially, that's why I've been a blog-neglecter. And from the bottom of my non-writing-non-blogging heart, I'm sorry. Really. Honest. But I promise, that when the business is settled, when the site has been designed and when the paperie is on the "shelf" of the world wide web, I will get back to posting and blogging and letting you in on more fun goodies from the Paper C headquarters. Which is now, in my home studio, in the middle of the outback, amongst the breathtaking beauty of World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park.

I've been falling head first into the lovely little world of being "NiCE". I just love it. It makes me happy. It makes life sweeter. Richer. More fulfilling. And just plain, "nicer".

Well, I love where I live right now. I love Australia..so much so that I get my citizenship in December. YAY. My hubby is an Aussie,& he's never lived in the US, so eventually we want to move back there. {Like in 10-15 years.} When we do, we'll go to San Francisco. I grew up there, & most of my close family lives there. San Francisco, to me, is the most beautiful city on Earth. Not just physcially, but the spirit and the energy of the city is unmatched. So, I would love to move back there. When the time is right.

I'm alive you all! I really am! I've just been so busy lately...lots of ups and downs, ins and outs, but, I'm here and I'm pushing on. {See post below.}

Have been superbly busy, and on the days I've not been superbly busy, I've been catching up with life things that creep up when I'm busy, that I put to the back burner. But I'm here. Still.

One of my latest projects has been designing a Simplicity Range of wedding stationery, to be sold exclusively through my Etsy store. The range is meant to be classic, clean, simple, and timeless...and also meant to be cost effective, so as to not blow your wedding budget.

The range is listed along with the RSVP cards, but as each piece is designed around the monogram, each piece of wedding stationery from the invite to the menu and all pieces in between, can easily be coordinated, giving you a flawless and seamless stationery line from start to finish.

A little gut-wrenching honesty

Coming off of a nice, long, relaxed Easter holiday with my beautiful daughter and gorgeous husband, I knew starting back to work today would be busy, but rewarding. I was positive, upbeat, and rarin to go!

Boy, was I. Wrong.

Stress from the word go. Everything that could go wrong did. To be honest with you, I've had some struggles in the direction the business is heading in and I've been more than a little frustrated with the snails pace that things have been moving at. And the worst part? I've been taking it personal! I shouldn't be, but I do. I'm not gonna lie. When I get rejection, it's like a slap in the face..like somehow I've failed. In.Sane.

The logical, focused, and realistic side of me says that everything that happens, is happening for a reason..that every step that I take, good or bad, is taking me in the direction that I meant to go in. The irrational, emotional, and insane part of me is letting the negativity take over and is consuming me with feelings of self-doubt, hesitation, fear, and a sense of just wanting to let it all go so I don't have to worry about the let down's and rejections. Cop out? Yep. Sincere, genuine, gut-wrenching honesty? You know it.

I struggled through my reader today..sifting through all the posts on meaningless this, and I could care less about that..I had bigger things to think about..like, whether or not I'm going to keep this business. Who gives a rat's about a peony and rose bouquet when I'm considering giving up on my dream!? Then, I got to Little Bit Funky. This is one of my favourite blogs and it has nothing to do with weddings. It was an Easter post and this is what Crystal said:

What the? Did she write that for me? How? She doesn't even know me! But it so...fits! So, after reading that a million times, after a great pep talk {or 12} from my fantabulous husband, and after tons of positive wishes and thoughts from friends, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

What next?

Well, I'm still going to wonder when things will turn around. But, tomorrow morning, I'm going to wake up, I'm going to fix a ginormous pot of coffee, and start making lists. I'm going to make lists of lists, and these lists are going to have goals...short-medium-long term goals. They're going to cover what I want. What I don't want. What I will, and what I won't, do. If I can write it, it'll be written. I'm going to quit doubting myself and my talents. I'm damn good at what I do. I know it as sure as I'm typing this. I'm going to live it. Through the good and the bad, I will never lose sight of it. I provide kick ass customer service. I love my clients..and my clients love me. Did I mention I'm damn good at what I do? Well, I am. I have faults. I'm human, I always will have faults. I will continue to learn that my faults do not define the type of human being that I am, or that I will become.

Consistent positivity is something that I am always trying to find in my life. All I can do is keep on keepin on. I'm on this path for a reason. I'm going to always remind myself that this is where I'm meant to be, right this second. And get through this very second so I can get through the next.

PS. I love the OM symbol. It's the most paramount symbol in Hinduism and represents unconditional love and harmony, an ancient symbol of peace and tranquility.

The Paper Couturière

This is the first opportunity that I've given myself to sit at the computer and write a blog post. As many of you know, I've spent the better part of the last 5 weeks or so completely overhauling the website. Why did it only take you 5 weeks, you ask? Well, because I was working on it 7 days a week, for up to 15 hours a day. Over the top? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.

With the launch of the new website just last Thursday, on 11 March, I've not wanted to even turn my computer on, let alone do any typing or editing. I've had enough of it. But, it's Monday. A new week, and time to get stuck back into it. I don't want to lose any of the creative juices that I rediscovered while on my website overhaul journey. Which brings me to right now.

So many of you assisted me in this process from beginning to end. You know who you are. I sought help at 3am, and I begged for assistance at 1pm. I was stressed beyond belief, and you listened to me, you offered advice, you gave me constructive criticism, and you never, not once, told me I was crazy {even though I'm sure you thought it}. {By the way, I am. Totally. Crazy.}

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. You helped me keep my sanity, and that means the world to me. For those of you who offered the most beautiful compliments and feedback after the launch, I say thank you. I am so proud of the finished result. I see how all of my hard work, all of the insomnia, and all of the stress headaches, have eventuated into a website that I believe is perfectly Autumn, perfectly The Paper Couturière. I am so blessed that you see the beauty in it, like I do. It's made everything so worthwhile.

Your wedding dress: white? white? or white?

Okay, so, we all know that white is not a colour right? We all know that it's a shade. Well, did you also know that there are about 392 different shades of the shade white? And did you also know that you can get a wedding dress in all of those different shades? Yes, my mind is also boggling with the revelation that there is a shade of white for every day of the calendar year. But what are those shades? How are they described? And if you see a wedding dress that is blue white, exactly how is the mother-of-the-bride going to be able to picture it?

This a just a small sampling of the endless list of shades of white, but these are the most common and if you're doing hardcore dress shopping, you're sure to run into at least some of them.

Champagne or Oyster

Off-White, w/ pink undertones and suits the bride who has olive complexion, or other darker skin tones.

Diamond White/Natural White

Found only in more expensive fabrics, such as silk, this colour will suit brides with a light complexion.

Latte

This colour of dress is slightly darker than the Champagne/Oyster dress, but will still suit the bride with darker skin complexion.

Ivory/Eggshell

This shade of white has golden or yellow undertones and will suit the bride with fair complexion.

Stark White/Blue White

DO NOT wear this shade of white if you are have a fair complexion. Step. Away. From. This. Dress. And. No one. Will. Get. Hurt. This shade is only suited for brides w/ a darker complexion.

Add some colour

It's 2010 and brides are increasingly getting more and more daring with their choice of bridal attire. From White, to pink, or both {thanks Gwen Stefani}, to Scarlet red, and even black, brides are making the choice based on their personalities and what they would feel most comfortable in. C'mon now, you don't see a rocker-chic-glam-bride dressed in an Ivory ruffled number do you? No.

Even if you want to go the white {or various shades of it} route, but you still want to add a splash of colour to better define your personality..add a sash in a coordinating wedding colour...choose shoes that give your attire a pop of colour, or, instead of a veil, choose a colourful hair accessory. Go on. Take the best of both worlds! Wear white to make your mom happy, but make yourself happy by adding some colour.

For my wedding, I chose a champagne coloured dress and mantilla, and apple green sandals with rhinestone butterflies. Those, were my pop of colour! What will yours be?

The past few months that I've been on Twitter, I've seen "tweet" after "tweet" after "tweet" referring to #MTH2010. What the heck is #MTH2010? "Oh, it must just be a US/wedding industry 'thing'", I thought. Well, yes, kinda...and no. I'll get more into what #MTH2010 is in a second...I just need to digress for a bit...

So, in my mind and heart, I started The Paper Couturière almost 20 years ago when I was age ??{You didn't think I'd tell you, did you?}. Paper & design have both been life long passions and it wasn't until I was an adult that I realized I could actually make a business of it. My plans; ideas, and dreams, really came to fruition in 2008.

Starting my own business has been such a blessing, however, I've struggled to "Brand" my business. Who am I? Who is The Paper Couturière? What image or style do I want to convey to my current and future clients? I've always struggled with finding the right image that perfectly conveys just who I am. {Am I bright; colourful; & funky? yes. Am I sheer, subtle, all light muted tones? yes. Am I retro, eclectic, & funky? yes. I'm all of those styles. Do I want to brand myself & my business based on my strong French/Cajun heritage?}

Yes. I need help. My name is Autumn, I'm 38 years old, I've lived in 3 countries and 15 of the 50 US States, and I need help...STAT. So you see, personal as well as professional branding is a current struggle for me..even though I'm knocking on 40's door. My Wedding Concierge

About 5 years ago when I was knee deep in wedding magazines and swatches, I was the typical Bride-to-be: lugging around a 15lb notebook {that's roughly 30 kilo's for all you Aussies out there} everywhere I went, & dropping clip outs here; there; and everywhere...like little Gretel dropping her bread crumbs to find her way home. It was not pretty. I used the internet as much as I could, but, even that was a patience tester given the fact that much of the planning for my American wedding, was done after I moved to Australia. No. Easy. Feat. What I needed was a "1-stop-shop", if you will. I needed someplace to go, where all of the wedding resources that I needed, in the town I was getting married in {The Seelbach Hilton, Lousiville KY, FYI}, was available at my fingertips. Sadly, in 2005/2006, I knew of no such place.

Almost 4 years after my wedding, I know of a place now:

My Wedding Concierge. *cue angels singing in harmony*

Imagine you're a bride at the infant stages of planning. You have no idea. You are swamped. You are overwhelmed with information overload. You need help. Imagine you're walking down the street with your 15lb. notebook and all of your clip outs are falling out of said notebook, flying around, you're desperate to catch all of them, etc. Got that visual? A little information on this Bridal Godsend:

My new addiction..monograms and logos

I absolutely love a good monogram and logo. I love that you can use them on all of your personal correspondence and even on websites/blogs/Facebook/Twitter...etc. A good monogram tells those that see it, who you are; what you like, and can even give others a glimpse into your personality. If you're a business, a monogram or logo is vital when "branding" yourself..it's quite necessary to have the ability to take your logo and translate it into every aspect of your business.

Now, mind you, when I say monogram and/or logo, I'm not talkin the stuffy old fashioned kind...you know the ones. Ones that my grandfather had specially embroidered into his golf polo's. One of 4 of my newest clients, Lisa & Anthony are a couple getting married in May. They came to me the week before Christmas to hire me to complete their wedding suite. I, of course, was only to happy to oblige. They are both so sweet, and I wanted to make sure they got exactly what they wanted.

With a colour palette of very pale yellow, cream, and off white, I wanted to give them an invitation that was delicate, yet beautiful, and one that reflected the lightness of the colours they chose. Lisa will be wearing pearl jewelry & her wedding dress is highlighted by beautiful off white lace, and I wanted to mirror that in the invites.

I can't wait to deliver them on Friday to the soon-to-be-Mr.-&-Mrs. :)

The official launch of San Francisco's premier online bridal magazine, IZZY Magazine, has finally made it. It's modern, fun, sexy, colourful, and is FULL of information that can help the brides of today easily make decisions to help them plan and execute their own perfect day!

Okay, I'm a little biased. Why? Because Melissa, the Editor in Chief/Publisher, graciously contacted me a few months back and asked if I would be happy to have a piece written on me, and The Paper Couturière. What? Are you kidding? Of course! So I set off to design a special IZZY invite and RSVP and answered the interview questions. You'll find my interview on story on page 77.

A little glimpse into my wedding... {Seelbach Hilton Louisville, KY. 19 August 2006}

"Mama's little helper"..thank you Korbel. I've had some mighty fine times with you.

Our Mad Hatter...blueberry on top and bottom tier {think blueberry, as in one ginormous blueberry muffin}, with orange and cherry in the centre tier. Okay. I got married in Louisville KY in the middle of August. Anyone at all who has spent anytime there during the summer knows how hot and humid it gets. I was not trying to have a heavy; weighty cake that was layer upon layer of thick icing and cream and fondant. So, we went light and fruity and it was the most devine cake..ever.

The Tim Tam. If you're an Aussie, keep reading cause this will not hold any importance to you. I used individually wrapped packets of Tim Tams as my favour. Now, I'm sure you American's know what a Tim Tam is by now, seeing as how Kroger is carrying them via Pepperidge Farm. Let me just say that if it's not by Arnotts, and Pepperidge Farm is not Arnotts, then it's not a Tim Tam. I digress. TT's are a staple in every respectable Aussie cupboard...like Nutella {yuck} or Vegemite {double yuck}. They are crisp and creamy in the centre..full of chocolately goodness. If you haven't tasted an Aussie Tim Tam, you've not lived. Which is why they were my favour. My favour tag?: "From the land down under, for you a treat. It's a chocolate Aussie Tim Tam, and it's so yummy to eat." {Okay, typing that out, I realized just how corny that is.}

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Ain't no ocean great enough either because R and I endured 14 months of seperation while he was in Australia and I was in the US. Our entire relationship was spent living apart. Nothing was going to seperate us, which is why we chose that song as our processional.

What's a Man, uh, Groom, to do?

Back when Rodney and I were planning our wedding, I likened the wedding day preparations for him, as like a big girly shopping trip where he would have to wait for me while I tried on countless of outfits in store after store, each time asking, "does this make my butt look too big"? Yeah, I never took him as the kind of guy who would have insane amounts of fun wrapping votives in decorative paper or really losing sleep over champagne types or the pro's and con's of fondant. He is the typical male when it comes to things like this....which is why I took care of the girly things, only letting him know what decisions I had made after I made them. It was safer that way {and alot less stressful}.

But do the girls ever stop to think that, "Hey, wait a minute. This is his wedding too. What if there are aspects about it that he might like to have a say in?" Just as I'm sure there were facets of the preparations that R would've liked to participate in, there might be facets of your own wedding planning that your fiancé might want to be a part of.

Here is a list of 20 things that, if they are going to be present in your wedding, let your man look after them. It'll make him feel included and what's more, he'll be ever so greatful that you trusted him enough to have his say so in certain aspects of the wedding day. After all, he's gonna be there too, right?

1) Asking his best friend to be his best man.

2) Designing your wedding website.

3) Working on the music playlist. {Especially if you are using your iPod.}

4) Picking out the appetizers.

5) Creating a wedding microbrew. {Hello? Fun for a guy? Yes.}

6) Choosing what he'll wear? {It's just 1 day ladies. You can let him do this for just 1 day.}

7) Comparing cake flavours.

8) Researching the honeymoon.

9) Figuring out the map/directions cards {We all know how good guys are at asking directions.}

10) Going to the menu tasting.

11) Proofreading the invitations; programs, etc. {Guys like finding mistakes.}

12) Wielding the scan gun as you register for gifts. {It'll make him feel like Dirty Harry.}

13) Getting a day-before massage. {With you, of course.}

14) Choosing your wedding day ride. {Cross your fingers it's not a Harley.}

15) Writing his vows.

16) Attending the Bachelor Party {Bucks Night} {& hopefully remembering it.}

17) Unwrapping presents.,

18) Deciding on the wines.

19) Organizing pyrotechnics {fireworks, sparklers, etc}.

20) Practicing the first kiss.

Letting your man take charge of at least some of these aspects of your big day, it'll take the stress off of you {always a plus} and make him feel included & that his wants are taken into consideration. Putting you both, in a win-win situation.

If you have any sort of affinity for fabric, whether you know how to sew or not, you absolutely can not go past Amy Butler. Her fabric design skills are second to none! The colours; textures, and patterns are ridiculously fantastic! I especially love her latest collection called, simply, "Love". Perfect! Just in time for Valentines Day. From flannels, to fabrics sturdy enough for Home Décor, to fabrics light and airy enough for a sun dress, the colours and patterns in her newest collection are to die for.

Any one of these patterns I can easily see being a focal point pattern on a bright Saturday wedding... for table linens, to wrap around the floral bouquets, to sew into ribbons to hang escort cards from...you name it!

Try as I might, I simply can not pick a favourite. My only wish? That I could find paper that looked just. like. this.

Pomegranate Perfection

Weddings come in all shapes and sizes, but, let's be honest. We've all seen some themes of weddings way to many times. The same red rose centrepieces, the same white 3-tierd cakes, the same steak and chicken dinner...same...same...same...boring. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong w/ red roses or white 3-tiered cakes, but, lets mix it up a bit. Add a little bit of extraordinary into your day.

Which is why I love this Style Me Pretty post. It's fun, it's vintage, it's flirty...and best of all, it showcases a beautifully rich and velvety shade of pink..Pomegranate. Not to mention it's chock full of tons of "take away" ideas that you can use in your own wedding. What I think is so spectacular about this table set up, is that all of the glass bottles were purchased from the Salvation Army! How's that for DIY chic?

Notecards for Haiti Relief

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last week, I was left speechless and feeling very heartbroken and helpless. All I wanted to do was hop on the first plane out of Melbourne, heading straight for Haiti. Desperate times call for desperate measures right? Then, the realistic side of my brain kicked in and I realized that a flight was just not possible. How could I help? Agencies were saying, "don't give food or clothes or blankets." Then, what am I supposed to do? I had to do something. I likened this disaster to Mother Nature's version of 11 September...only in some ways, worse.

This past Sunday, my husband; daughter, and I, went to Rod Laver Arena, where the Australian Open is being held, and attended a charity fundraiser match organized by Roger Federer. "Hit for Haiti", it was called. He organized an event to raise funds, and he's going to be doing what he does best, and loves most: playing tennis. That's when the idea hit me: I love designing and creating, why not create notecards to raise money for relief efforts?

Needless to say, I have been at the computer for almost 2 days straight drafting and designing and creating and doing it all over again. And I couldn't be happier.

These notecards will be sold for a limited time only. With 10 designs to choose from {all 10 designs are shown on my website}, the notecards are sold in packs of 5 for $15 or 10 for $25, they come with matching plain envelopes and are blank inside for your own personal note. What I really like about these cards is that I designed them with an inspirational quote on the front. But what I like BEST about these cards is that 100% of the money raised will go directly to Haiti relief efforts. That's right, you read correctly: 100%. Meaning, I will make NO money for these cards...and I wouldn't have it any other way. The notecards can either be purchased from my Etsy store here, or on my website here. Please don't forget to specify the colour of card/envelope you want {white or cream} and the design{s}.

I would love to raise at least $500 {but secretly, I'm hoping for much more}. So please help me reach and exceed this goal!

As much as I love the whiteness of a winter wedding, accented by candlelight and deep hues, a vibrant summer wedding full of cool colours and fruity drinks is right up my alley...I can practically see the tan lines.

What's so great about a Summer wedding, are all of the ways that it can be personalized to reflect you. There's no room for "cookie cutter" in a Summer wedding. Instead, it's all about bringing your individual style; flavour; and personality to your big day. Are you one of the millions who have been swept up by the whole vampire, "Twilight" saga? I must confess, I have yet to be caught up in the craze, but I know a trend when I see it and the gothic vampire trend has officially hit the wedding industry.

I am so excited for the start of a New Year! New Year = new ventures, new possibilities, new goals, new successes, and everything in between. 2009 was a great year! It saw me officially launch The Paper Couturière, to raving success, it saw me leave one life milestone and dive head first into another, and it saw me work; work; work, and work more, on what I love the most: Paper.

2010 is sure to be all that, and so much more! I will make every effort to update this blog on a more regular basis, and ensure that the content is such that it inspires, motivates, gives ideas, teaches, and, of course, gives more of the inside scoop of what is The Paper Couturière.

I have so many ideas and so many goals that I want to achieve and I can't wait for 1 January!! As many of you know, I launched a range of luxurious note cards in every attempt to scale down the use of email correspondance and bring personal, handwritten thank you's to the forefront. I have every intention on expanding that range, and bringing it into the spotlight as notecards are a beautiful gift and a wonderful way to let someone know that you are thinking about them. Keep your eyes peeled for new additions and new updates to my already fabu range.

What I am looking forward to most in 2010, is YOUR feedback. I want to give you what you want to see, what you want to read. I toil at this computer for hours a day, everyday. I want to ensure that what I am looking at and what I am adding to this blog, is what YOU are interested in. So please, feel free to let me know what it is you are after and I will do my best to give it to you.

It's not your everyday wedding magazine..it's new, fresh, funky, and specializes in oh so different planning. I love it! And I can't wait until the first issue goes live!

Oh yeah, the message from Melissa...did I say that she is the creative force behind this wonderful magazine? Well, we have plans on meeting the next time I'm in San Francisco visiting the family, but until then, she has asked to feature me {The Paper Couturière} in the upcoming issue! YAY! The newest venture

A couple of months ago, I was asked by the owner of a PR company in Sydney to create items for the gift bags for the Tonia Todman/Blumin roses launch. Never passing up on opportunities to get the word out about The Paper Couturière, I graciously {and quickly} accepted. So, away to work I went. This post actually isn't about the launch..it's about a wonderful business endeavour that was started on Launch day.

It was at the launch when I met Kristina, the owner of Urban Fresh Floral and Paper Boutique. She gave me some background history of her boutique and I gave her some history of The Paper Couturière. She invited me to come into the shop to have a meeting about carrying my range of invitations and stationery in her boutique. {What's that about opportunity that I can't pass up?} Long story short, I have spent the last several weeks glued to the computer {quite literally}, suffering from mind blanks and paper cuts, all to come up with 21 spectacular designs which are now featured in the boutique. And I couldn't be happier.

Her shop is absolutely adorable! Located in Eltham, you walk in and it's like you are walking into a quaint paper boutique, that happens to sell some of Australia's finest floral creations...many flowers I've never seen in other Melbourne florists. I am quite happy to have designed a special line of invitations just for the boutique, as the "vibe" of the shop is just the "vibe" I like to put out with my invitations..cozy, unique, stunning, comforting, and simply, the best.

I've been busy busy busy lately..since my last post, I've been designing away! I have been asked to provide a range of invitations and stationery for Urban Fresh Floral and Paper Boutique {Eltham Victoria}, and as such, I've been glued to the studio...quite literally, glued! I'm so happy with the creations that have flowed from my frazzled mind and my ink stained and paper cut fingers. It's all such a labour of love and I can't think of anything on this earth that I would rather do more!

Tools of the trade

The husband...a very important tool of the trade. The husband is always very effective in completing the tasks that are mundane and/or too difficult, or just not fun. i.e. measuring paper to cut. Not fun. So, I use the all important husband tool to use his proficient skills in Math, to measure the paper so I can turn it into something pretty...hence, fun.
Blank pieces of white cardstock...for a project that is yet to be completed, and images yet to be posted. {Photo's will come soon.}

The pencil, eraser, bone folder, ruler, exacto knife and self-healing cutting mat. Essentials.

Artsy fartsy "paints", stamp, ink pad, & glitter glue that will be used in my current project.

These tools of my trade will make more sense and be more understandable when I complete my current project and post the photos. It's tons of hard work...constant, back breaking, tedious, hard work..but it's so worth it. I ♥ my trade.

Okay, I'm just going to be honest here for a minute. I am absolutely, utterly, and positively in love with anything and everything vintage. I have been dying to find some nice vintage art that I can use for my invitations and stationery.

I was sitting at my computer today, begging the heavens for a little bit of inspiration...clicking away at the keyboard trying to find something, anything, that was going to get my creative juices flowing. Chairs- originally $30 for the both of them..the guy at the market told me in his gruff Eastern European accent, after he saw Rodney spying them.." I give you both $5!" Uh, excuse me? Are you serious? "Yes, $5 for both". SOLD! From $30 to $5..not bad.
Fabric-thank you Ikea. $15 for enough fabric for both chairs
Paint-Nippon + Bunnings = approx $8 worth used
Trimming-$8 at Spotlight

GRAND TOTAL FOR BOTH CHAIRS: $36!!

What's that you say? I'm awesome? Oh yes, thank you! Not bad for a couple unique chairs that you won't be able to find in any shop...plus, it allowed my wonderful husband and I some quality time!

So now it's up to you to try and beat that...2 DIY chairs for under $50. Consider Operation Tush Re-Cush a success!

Is the bottom of the chair legs "gold-esque"? Or are they just old; stained "silver-esque"?

Oh what a state these brownish/greenish vinyl covers are in..I'm sure at one point or another members from the Brady and/or Partridge families sat in these chairs.

So you all will remember that approximately 2 weeks ago, I started "Operation Tush Re-Cush". The ultimate goal was to pluck these chairs from their death row sentence and to bring them back to life...all on a meager budget of $50 or less. {That's AUD$50, NOT US$50..which means I have alot less to work with...} "Imposible!" {spoken w/ a French accent} you say...to which I respond "Non, n'est pas imposible!" I have managed to win the battle of Operation Tush Re-cush for a mere....

Last night, a friend of mine and I, went to see Lisa Williams at the Arts Centre. It was the Melbourne stop of her world tour: Messages From the Other Side. 1 word: PHENOMENAL! It was excellent.

I've always had a belief in mediumship; clairavoyance; and communication with "the other side". My mom tells me that when I was younger I would see things; smell things; and hear things, that other people couldn't. She often tells me about how I would sit by myself and talk to "someone" sitting next to me...someone that she couldn't see. That has carried over to my adult life and oftentimes I can sense that those that I've loved and lost, are only just right there next to me.

So, seeing Lisa Williams last night, was 1) right up my alley, but also 2) was a reminder to me that the life that we live right now, today; tomorrow; and the day after tomorrow, is not the only "life" that exists. I want to go out and explore it; learn more about it; and really focus on fine tuning the skills that might already exist in me. I have my crystals and pendulums for a reason. So I'm determined to read the books, that have been collecting dust on my shelf; practice; and, see what happens. If it all goes well, then I'll be able to communicate. Watch this space...

Last weeks DIY project

Last weekend, I decided that I wanted to do a quick and easy DIY project. I have tons of pieces of paper lying around with ideas, but had no place to post them for easy reference. And I didn't want your average, boring, run-of-the-mill corkboard. So off to Bunnings {Home Depot for all you Americans} and Ikea Rodney and I went.

We purchased some chair railing for about $10/3 metres, a pot of bright green sample paint for $4, a 6 pack of cork tiles for $13, and the material was purchased at Ikea...$9.99/metre. We came home where Rodney swiftly cut the wood to make a frame. It took a couple of days to get the frame together, when you count drying time for paint and wood glue. In the meantime, we had a spare piece of wood that we used to adhere the 6 cork tiles to, which gave me my corkboard. Once the glue had set on the tiles, I covered the whole thing w/ the Ikea fabric and attached it to the back of the board w/ a staple gun. Then we just attached the board to the frame with some nifty little corner attachment thingy-ma-bobbers {which is the technical term, by the way}, and voilà! A corkboard that is both unique AND functional! **Now, if only I could find all those scraps of paper w/ ideas** And all that for only $33! {Well, actually not even that much because I have wood and fabric left over...maybe for another project?}

Operation Tush Re-Cush

This is the "Before" version of what, I assure you, will be an "After" version. {Nothing that looks like this should be out in society.} It's my newest DIY project, and I'm naming it: *drum roll please* Operation Tush Re-Cush. My biggest challenge is, not only to make these chairs fit for society, but, to do it on a budget of less than $50 for BOTH chairs. Is it possible to bring chairs back to life, from what would've been certain death, for less than the cost of a bottle of good Vodka? We shall see. Stayed tuned...

As far as I'm concerned, there is no better way to recycle; reuse; and renew than with a DIY project. Going to the old run down Laverton Market searching through the piles of junk, literally, is so fun {and dirty}...especially when I can find just the perfect cracked; scratched; poorly taken care of photo frame to bring it home, give it a high gloss paint job; add fabric covered cork and voila, a DIY cork board to hang photos; tickets; keepsakes; business cards; anything really.

So today, on this warm and extremely windy Melbourne day, I think I'm going to do a DIY project. Maybe paint my chest of drawers in my "studio" an aqua blue and paint little flourishes on the handles..or if I go to the market I might look for an old run down chair, dining or otherwise, so I can recover it; paint it; whatever..I'm thinking, zebra stripe cushion and a high gloss pink or aqua paint..hmmmm...so many ideas, so few weekends. Be sure to check back because I WILL have photos...I can't wait! :)
